Maya's Experience

Maya recently moved abroad for a youth mobility project. At first, the experience felt exciting, positive, and full of new opportunities. She hoped to meet new people, improve her skills, and enjoy living in a different environment.

After several weeks, however, Maya begins feeling lonely, stressed, and emotionally overwhelmed. She struggles with communication, feels disconnected from the group, and finds it difficult to adapt to the new environment.

Over time, Maya starts avoiding social activities and spends most evenings alone. She feels embarrassed to admit that she is not coping well and worries that others may judge her or think she is weak.

As the stress continues, Maya becomes more emotionally exhausted and unsure where to look for support. One evening, she searches online for help and wellbeing resources. However, the large number of organisations and websites confuses her, and she does not know which support services are trustworthy or safe to contact.

One day, Maya decides to speak with another participant who had experienced similar feelings during a previous mobility project. The conversation helps her realise that emotional stress, loneliness, and adaptation difficulties are common experiences for many young people in unfamiliar environments.

With support and guidance, Maya slowly begins reconnecting with others, participating in activities again, and learning where to find reliable wellbeing and support resources.

Maya’s experience shows that reaching out (even in small ways) can be the first step toward feeling more grounded, supported, and confident in a new environment.
